October Is National Heritage Month In Turks And Caicos

October is National Heritage Month in Turks and Caicos

October is National Heritage Month in the Turks and Caicos. If you are thinking of planning a fall vacation at what is traditionally a quieter time of year here,  there still are a number of interesting events to experience.

Salt Festival (Salt Cay)

Kicking off National Heritage month at the beginning of October, the Salt Festival is held on Salt Cay off of Grand Turk, to the east of the Caicos island chain.

Salt was once the Turks and Caicos’ most valuable commodity, with almost as much value as a currency. The flat salt pans of the surrounding cays made the Turks and Caicos the perfect place to produce this valuable resource.

The Salt Festival these days is more of a chance for everyone to get together for a weekend of dancing and celebrating. Ask the concierge at the Tuscany for information about how to get to Grand Turk and Salt Cay.

Seafood Festival (South Caicos)

Mid-October sees the start of the spectacular Seafood Festival. Held on South Caicos, the Seafood Festival is a great opportunity to try out lobster, conch, wonderful fresh fish and delicious crab cakes.

Sponge Festival (Middle Caicos)

A little later in October it’s Middle Caicos’ turn to host a festival. Just a short boat trip away from the northeast tip of Providenciales, visiting Middle Caicos is like taking a trip back in time. The Sponge Festival is a perfect way to make connections with local residents and experience the authentic Caribbean.

Maritime Festival (Providenciales)

The last weekend of October is the grand finale of National Heritage Month. The Maritime Festival is held on Providenciales quite close to the Bight, about 20 minutes by car from the Tuscany resort. This is is a great opportunity to sample delicious local food while enjoying local music.
