Humpback Whales migrate through Turks and Caicos?

When most people hear the word “whale,” they probably think of Alaska, or maybe the West Coast, not Turks & Caicos. Yet, the entire school, or "gam," of 2,500 North Atlantic Humpbacks passes through the waters near Grand Turk and Salt Cay on their annual mating and birth migration. December through early April is the ideal time to visit Columbus Passage near Salt Cay and to marvel at their size and playfulness.

Staying at The Tuscany on Grace Bay keeps you close to a wide range of exciting activities in the Turks and Caicos Islands. Spend an afternoon of sunbathing on the beach, explore the 12 miles of Grace Bay, or relax by our European-style pool. Pursue the elusive bonefish on the saltwater flats, go snorkeling at the third largest barrier reef in the world, or test your skills at Provo Golf Course, designed by Karl Litten.

Whatever you choose to do, you won’t be bored, and after a long day, you can look forward to the serenity of the Tuscany.

Turks and Caicos Diving & Snorkeling

Exceptional visibility, steep walls, coral reefs, and a diversity of marine life draw thousands of divers and snorkelers to Turks and Caicos every year. After the Great Barrier Reef off the eastern coast of Australia and the Belize Coral Reef, the Turks & Caicos Islands boast the third-largest coral reef in the world.

Golf

Provo Golf Course
Designed by Karl Litten, Provo Golf Course is considered one of the best in the Caribbean. The Bermuda-style 419 blend offers excellent lies on the fairways, and the dwarf Bermuda makes excellent putting surfaces. Sinking the putts is up to you though.

Natural limestone outcroppings bring both beauty and technical challenges to the course.

Flamingos and egrets populate the lakes, and conch shells painted white mark the difficulty of each hole. From the black tee, the course runs 6,705 yards. The holes of the front nine are longer and have larger water hazards; the back nine are very narrow with more wind. Tee times run from 7am to 3:30pm. Golf lessons and an onsite driving range are available.

Visit Provo Golf Course for more information.

Turks and Caicos Fishing

Bone Fishing
The silvery bonefish makes its home in the shallow flats near mangroves. Some fisherman use spin casting gear to pursue this elusive species, but catching one on a fly rod is, of course, the purist's route. Belongers in the Turks and Caicos, especially the men, grow up fishing and have a knack for seeing the greenish backs of the bonefish against the sand as they feed in the flats.

DB Tours

Reef Fishing
Especially fun for children, bottom fishing is similar to fishing in a lake or pond. The north side reef waters and south shore banks provide habitat for snapper, grouper, yellowfin, parrotfish, and other species. Guides should provide all necessary gear, such as spinning reels, saltwater rods, and relatively light line, and most will be happy to clean and filet your catch. Talk about fresh fish!

Caving

Middle Caicos is home to over 15 miles of above-ground caves, the largest such chain of caves in all of the Bahamas and the Turks & Caicos Islands. Formed by the erosion of limestone, they were once frequented by Lucayan Indians, and you can still see some of this indigenous people's art on the cave walls.

These tours are suitable for all ages, but be sure to bring appropriate footwear, such as tennis shoes or hiking boots. If you aren't planning to spend the night on Middle Caicos, ask for a day excursion. You can arrange a tour through the caves with local guides by calling Middle Caicos Co-op at 649-941-7639 or by visiting Amphibious Adventures online.
